Raffles City

Across Bras Basah Road from Raffles Hotel is Raffles City (see illustration on page 79). An imposing cluster of towers incorporating two hotels (Swissôtel The Stamford – the tallest hotel in the world – and Fairmont Singapore), it also contains an office tower and the enormous Raffles City Shopping Centre. Designed by I.M. Pei (in association with Architects 61) in 1985, it replaced the Raffles Institution, Singapore’s premier boys’ school, which had moved to Grange Road. Though the school buildings were of no great architectural merit, their destruction caused such an outcry that there has been an increased awareness of the value of Singapore’s dwindling stock of colonial-era buildings ever since. Now more effort is made to rehabilitate and reuse these older buildings rather than demolishing and replacing them with something new.

For some really spectacular views of the city centre – particularly at night – head to one of the restaurants and bars at the top of Swissôtel The Stamford.
